ReWilding
April 6th - May 1st, 2016
Opening Reception: April 7th, 7-9pm
More than something to be mapped and defined, the ReWilding exhibition positions the Canadian landscape as a site for questioning and (re)imaginging relationships between humans and the natural world. Sarah Carlson blursSpatial boundaries are creates new liminal environments for both human and non-human animals within her immersive paintings. These large-scale works layer organic, topographic and painterly figurations with geometric, linear and synthetic forms. As pictorial depth varies and layers pass into each other’s realm, their interactions become interchangeable and a hybrid interface for relating to space is facilitated. For the artist, these shapes simultaneously articulate both an interruption with the natural and a pathway of interconnection. This symbolic crossroads for physical and mystical journeying underscores nature’s powerful ability to reclaim and our vulnerability as a species if we don’t re-establish corridors with the natural.
